Wall Street Journal: Crime on the Rise, Police Cutting Back

Is the recession making your neighborhood less safe? According to a recent survey by the Police Executive Research Forum, 44% of police departments report increases in certain crimes, including home burglaries, that they believe are attributed to the economic crisis. And nearly two-thirds of those agencies say they are preparing plans for an overall cut in their total funding for the next fiscal year. 

Meantime, with more houses sitting empty from foreclosures, whole neighborhoods increasingly look tempting to looters. In that vein, the March issue of ShopSmart magazine from the publisher of Consumer Reports offers tips that won’t break the bank to help make a home less vulnerable to break-ins.
